If you’ve ever watched a US Presidential Election Debate, you’ve probably noticed them wearing a nice American Flag pin on their attire. They do this out of tradition and to display their patriotic commitment to the country they plan to serve.
However not all individuals were them at the debates.
Senator Kamala Harris – 2020
Seen here is then Democratic senator Kamala Harris during the Democratic primary debate of 2020. She is noticeably not wear a US Flag Lapel Pin.
But this does not display a lack of tradition, as seen in this next photo she is wearing a rectangle American flag pin. She later went on to become the first female Vice President, alongside President Joe Biden.
Andrew Yang – 2020
One surprising individual who shook up tradition was the candidate Andrew Yang in 2020 who wore a custom lapel pin with MATH written on it. It was an acronym for “Make America Think Harder“. He designed and promoted the lapel pin in almost all his interviews, events, and rallies.
It was a very strategic and noticed by the media approach for his campaign.

Former President Donald Trump – 2016
Former President Donald Trump highly promoted the tradition of wearing an American Flag pin almost every single time you saw him. It was helpful in his campaign to promote his now-famous “America First“.
Given, it was a common tradition before his campaign for candidates to wear the US flag upon their attire. However, if you were to see him not wearing the flag pin it would cause media and attention drawn to him regarding why he isn’t wearing one.
